Cowboys put up 6 home runs in 16-4 win over Pecos
The Cowboys went into Wednesday’s matchup against the Pecos Bills on a hot streak. Alpine had won ten games in a row and had a 22-1 record. The Bills were 12-15 going into this matchup. Pecos has a 12-5 record when they didn’t play Alpine. The Cowboys have beaten Pecos ten times already on the season. The game was held at a neutral site in Fort Stockton, Texas.
Hunter Reid was the starting pitcher for Alpine in this matchup. Reid had just recently come off of a performance where he threw 116 pitches last Tuesday. He gave up a run in the first inning off of a passed ball.
Up until the third inning, this was a pitching duel. Hunter Reid had six strikeouts through three innings, and Pecos pitcher Saul Arias was on a role as well. Arias is nineteen years old, and at the age of seventeen was signed by the Milwaukee Brewers. Arias’s red-hot start to the day was halted by a solo shot from AJ Folds off of the scoreboard. This tied the game at one.
The fifth inning has been magical for Alpine all season. It was no different in this ball game as Hunter Reid opened up the inning with a solo home run to give Alpine a 2-1 lead. Taylor Darden then hit his first home run of his professional career. This three-run blast scored AJ Folds and Trevor Tripoli to make the score 5-1 in Alpine’s favor. The hits kept on coming against Pecos in the fifth when Johnny Medina delivered a two-run home run. Alpine led 7-1 after the fifth inning.
Hunter Reid ended up reaching ten strikeouts on the day in the fifth inning. Reid also only had one walk up to this point. The Cowboys kept it rolling in the sixth inning with a two-run blast from Trevor Tripoli. It was back-to-back games with a home run for Tripoli. The bases were loaded after this, and Hunter Reid cleared the bases with an RBI double to make the score 12-1. Pecos would finally get back on the board later that inning with a Sacrfice fly from Joshua Rodriguez.
Hunter Reid’s day came to an end going into the seventh inning. His final line was: Six innings pitched, seven hits, two runs, one earned run, two walks, and eleven strikeouts. He was replaced by Riley Bost who made his Cowboy debut. Bost ended up walking a batter in one inning of work before picking up a strikeout.
Taylor Darden continued an incredible day with an RBI triple that scored Tripoli to make the score 13-2. Darden then reached home off of a balk. Drake Angeron would put the cherry on top in the seventh inning with his second home run of the season. This gave Alpine a 16-2 lead.
Jesse Garcia pitched the ninth inning for the Cowboys and struck out two of the five batters he faced. Joe Horowitz came in the game to pitch the ninth inning for Alpine. Horowitz quickly saw the bases loaded on him with nobody out. He managed to get to two outs without allowing a run, before giving up a two run RBI single to Josh Boria to make the score 16-4. Alpine ultimately closed it out after that and won with a final score of 16-4.
The Cowboys travel to Santa Fe for a four-game series against the Fuego on June 27th at 7:00 CST.
